Lucid | Trailer
Myself and two friends produced this trailer for a psychological thriller that never was. We challenged ourselves to make a professional standard trailer with little to no resources or equipment. The trailer properly came together in the editing process where we manipulated the narrative and shots to tell the barebones of a story in a stylish way. Although this was my first ever production it taught me a lot about producing and directing film.
Reuben’s Retreat
This documentary tells the story of a tragic loss turned into a beautiful charity that brings joy into the lives of countless people. Having connections with the charity it was obvious to me that I should shine a light on this pressing issue. This documentary was filmed in only one day. I used a P2 camera along with handheld lighting fixtures to record the floating head interviews, then used an iPhone on a gimbal to capture the B-Roll footage. Because I only had one day to film there was a lot of work that went into the preparation. This project was vital for developing my organisation, planning and time management skills.
War is Over
This project originally for a christmas music video competition had me inspired to direct a cinematic introduction that tells the story of a WW2 western inspired Standoff, when the victor walks over to the man he bested he pictures a ‘better world’ where they could have gotten on and enjoyed the festivities of christmas together, the intentionally cringey editing is supposed to reflect this. The footage following the introduction is a collection of in the moment shots that add to the realism. Overall this was a fun project that tested my team management skills, although I have cut it in length as the rest of the footage doesn’t showcase many skills.
Shrimp Fried Rice
What began as a joke between friends was quickly turned into a comedic action short that follows a crime boss as he grapples with the understanding that shrimp can fry rice. The freedom that came with directing and producing a film without any expectations allowed me to experiment with lighting, foley, handheld shots and learn how to operate the blackmagic camera. This entire film was produced during the production of another college project and was completely directed and filmed in one day, the editing was also completed in under a week.
Ascent
A short film I produced on a whim to showcase the beautiful scenery of St. Ives in Cornwall. This film leaves a narrative up to the interpretation of the audience and focuses primarily on visuals and editing to engage the viewer. I incorporated a vintage style during the editing process by accompanying an ambient soundtrack with a jittery frame rate, blur vignette, film grain and warm colour grading.
